    Map Questions

Hey guys, a few more Questions....
What are Prefabs for maps? Like some of the ones at FPS banana? I was thinking of putting some of them into some of my maps, but I wanted to know how the work first, and all that.

Second, How do you make the ground all bumpy? Like in the regular TF2 maps, the ground is all slopey, and looks better than having a purly straight ground floor.

    That's it for now...
Me: "But the Gunslinger is so much more fun..."
Langrad: "We're here to win, not to..."
    Me: "Have fun?" "Hahaha"

Prefabs are simply prebuilt structures, like a house, a bunker, a well, that other people have made to add to your map, if you want to use them, or you can build your own in your map. Thus the term prefab, meaning prefabricated.

As far as the ground goes,

    go here http://www.gamedesign.net/

    create an account, log in,

then look for the "Cool ass terrain tutorial" on the left of the page.

Don't get carried away with to many small intricate triangles though, it will affect your map world_polygons and fps will be low.

Study the ground in other maps after you view this tutorial, and look how they did it.

once you apply displacement is there a way to select 1 face? like how did valve do the 'road/path' texture on the dirt.

how do you make the object something other than a box? i saw one tutorial that had a drop down menu on the right bar but i dont have anything like that.

Build the road, trail, path first the width of the texture, then build around it for grass on the side or blend textures.

thanks ill look up how to blend textures.

so how do you get the menu back on the right? like the entity one and how to change objects from a box to a cylinder.

are there 'portals' in source? (planes used to break up maps so the engine doesnt render everything)

is there a shader that makes a face 'non-renderable' or invisible... or should i apply the sky's shader.

    apply the tools/nodraw

you can apply to only one side of a brush by holding alt and pressing a side

uhh im not sure when to do this. i attempted. i know how to apply a texture to one side of a brush but i want to make it so that side is not rendered by the engine.

is there a way to select multiple sides of a brush and apply 1 texture to em so it looks seamless?

why is it called brushes? their objects.
