Is world peace possible?

We have witnessed fewer and fewer wars between countries since 1945, and so there is no reason to doubt that they could disappear like other horrifying acts. Psychologist and cognitive scientist Steven Pinker at Harvard University thinks it is completely conceivable that wars between countries might go the way of slave auctions, debtors’ prisons and other barbaric customs. He argues that while there is plenty of violence around the world, and more ways of killing each other, we have witnessed fewer and fewer wars between countries since 1945.

Not only, is war is at an all-time low, rates of homicide are far lower than they were in the Middle Ages, and issues like domestic violence are no longer seen as being acceptable. At the recent Singularity Summit in San Francisco, he told BBC Future about how we are predisposed to be violent but how we are also predisposed to be peaceful. There are some parts to the brain that impel us to carry out violence, such as the thirst for revenge, feelings of tribalism, or the quest for dominance. But packed into the same skull there are motives that inhibit us from violence, like empathy and reason that allow us to see violence as a problem to be solved instead of a contest to be won.

Any Reason to get more frames than your refresh rate?

So, one thing to keep in mind about the way that I think about things is that I don't like replacing parts. If I can do anything to make my hardware last longer, I'll do it even if it means sacrificing performance.

In Guild Wars 2, there's an option to limit your framerate to 30fps. I use that setting for two reasons: 1, Guild Wars 2 isn't exactly a high intensity game that requires you to have a high framerate to make split second decisions, and 2, my video card doesn't need to render so often in the pipeline, and so heat production is reduced, and longevity is preserved.

In First Person Shooters, I prefer to have a framerate of about 60, to facilitate quick reactions to changing conditions. One thing I noticed while I was playing Minecraft though was that my card was producing a lot of heat and running hard for a game that shouldn't push your video card that hard. Turns out I was putting out 200+ fps, and my video card was running unthrottled to get as many frames as possible. I forced vSync for it, and all of a sudden the video card was quiet and running nice and cool, and I never noticed the difference.

From what I understand around the web, 60Hz is 60 refreshes per second, and so any framerate above that (theoretically) 60 refreshes per second is completely moot because you won't actually see it. Yet I hear from Counterstrike people all the time that they're really proud of getting 200 or 300 frames per second in their game.

If I had the money for a 120Hz monitor, and the beast of a card I would need to push that many frames, I would see what all the hype is about, but I don't, so I can't. Unfortunately, a lot of the discussion around the internet about frame rates above 60 is limited to "Oh, the eye can't see above 60 frames, so it's pointless" or "The eye can see well above 200, so a 120Hz monitor and getting 120 frames is like going from driving a Kia to a Cadillac".

Honestly, I don't see WHY you would want 120 frames when 60 frames is adequate for me doing better than a lot of other people. But like I've said, I don't have the money for a 120Hz monitor, and so I don't know what that's like. Maybe you guys know more.

Brother versus brother in the EVE Universe

Attachment 9307 (http://www.teamplayergaming.com/attachments/battlefield-2/9307-early-opinions-battle.jpg.att)
I will start with a little back story for those who may not be familiar with the game of EVE. Within the game you have corporations, which are basically clans or guilds, alliances, which is a group of corporations with similar goals and interests, and coalitions, which is an unofficial friends list. Within the TPG family we have players with pilots in various alliances across the universe, but there are two main groups that live within 0.0 space, which is where the majority of PVP action takes place. In order to not divulge information that others may not want public I will only refer to players by their TPG names.

On one hand we have the members of the LAWN alliance. This group includes myself, JBMCW2010, DJ Mr. White, Alundil, Highstakes72, Tractorpull, Cainun, and recent additions Gehn, and evilblackjack. We live in the north, and are part of the CFC with the Goons. On the other hand we have the members of Against All Authorities, also known as -A-. This group includes Ranger10, w4jchosen, (4)manno, and Unorignal. If you have been around TPG for any amount of time you will recognize many of these names. Not only have we all played with and against each other in various TPG hosted games, but we have also been in the same corps and alliances in the past. I have only been in LAWN for about 4 months, and in that time we have not had any direct conflict with -A- as they were literally on the exact opposite side of the map from us, but last night that all changed.
Image: http://www.teamplayergaming.com/attachments/media-contributors/9124d1355080701-brother-vs-brother-eve-universe-aeon.jpg.att (http://www.teamplayergaming.com/attachments/media-contributors/9124d1355080701-brother-vs-brother-eve-universe-aeon.jpg.att)

Earlier in the week the CFC (Clusterfuck Coalition, which LAWN is a part of) had become aware of a random alliance that was building an Aeon, one of the largest and most expensive ships in the game. You have to build said ship in a Player Owned Station (POS), which is a structure in space that can be attacked, and if killed, the ship dies as well; you also lose all of the materials needed to build the ship. For a point of reference the ship costs roughly 20 billion ISK, in game currency, and it costs 1 billion ISK to pay for 60 days of game time if you pay with in game currency. If you pay with US dollars 60 days of game time is $30, so 20 billion ISK is roughly the equivalent of $600 US. Needless to say this is ship is pretty important.

Now that the stage is set let's get to the action. I, along with Cainun, were in a CFC fleet of about 240. The enemy consisted of various fleets totaling about 350, including an -A- fleet that was coming to help protect the Aeon production. As an added bonus there were a few other fleets totaling about 150 that are enemies of both sides that stated they would be assisting us, but still had the opportunity to shoot us as well. When the battle first started there was too much action to really pay attention to who was on the field for the "enemy", but as the battle wore on, and as ships were blown off of the field, there were fewer and fewer names to filter through, so I started looking through the list to see if any of my brothers on the other side were in the battle with us, and I saw two names I recognized, so I tried to get their attention, but unfortunately some people don't pay attention to local chat when their are still almost a thousand people in a system.

So, who did I see you ask? None other than our old friend (4)manno. After our fleet decided to disengage the -A- fleet decided to give chase as we headed home, and one of the leaders of the chase was one of two characters that I know of owned by (4). Once they stopped chasing, and we were safely away, I invited (4) to a chat. We discussed how much fun we both had, and how it was good to see each other. We chatted for a bit like old friends who bump into each other at the bar, and then each went our own way. While we didn't get to shoot each other it was still good to see an old friend, even if we were on opposite sides of the battlefield. This is why I play EVE, and I invite you to join me.

Can it be Post inauguration already (regardless of outcome)? The fawning over our oligarchy, as if there's a functional difference for 90% of the populace either way, is disturbing and distracting.

"which is the way they wants it" --points for those who get the reference

American politics is such a shameless circus of false dilemmas between Boolean illusions. Left/Right Lib/Con Rep/Dem Yes/No On/Off Up/Down. When the insanity ends and the dust and ashes settle will anyone's life have truly changed one way other another? Or will people just rest more easily with the silly notion that their "Team" won one for the gipper?

Sigh....I'm in the wrong business. I should be selling political pennants with big Ds and Rs on them. I could retire a wealthy individual either way.

All hail...ah who am I kidding...can't be arsed one way or another.

I just know that I have lots of work tomorrow, not enough hours in the day and yet more government boondoogles and insanity-riddled ideas to help fund.

Oh and another bit of random nonsense.....in this election cycle (pres, house, senate) we saw approximately 3-4 billion dollars spent. What changed? Same pres, house is the same, senate is the same....so who got screwed?

I think you all can figure out the answer to that one.

Just an interesting note of my personal lack of attachment to most things political in nature at this point.

In the last month or so of the High Drama/News forum I have posted in exactly two (2) serious business threads and only 3 total (contro-images, a bill maher thing and one specifically referencing me - thanks Ae hehe). This is all very un-scientifically (sp) noted by the little green carots.

Compared to 2-3 months prior to this where almost every thread had some involvement from me to one degree or another....

Attachment 8790 (http://www.teamplayergaming.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8790)Attachment 8791 (http://www.teamplayergaming.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8791)

Just an interesting thing for me (likely not for anyone else). But it shows the almost complete lack of interest I now have in most things political as I know (and have resigned to) we're all fucked screwed 6 ways from Sunday regardless. The pols and lobbies have the general voting population exactly where they need them to be. Stupid and spending money as if this were a sporting event and season tickets or autographed jerseys were in the offing.

Pathetic.

The.Uneducated.Public.Deserves.It (the shitty thing is that they'll drag us all along for the ride regardless).

Hi TPG, here's another blog post I made for music. Please visit my blog to listen to this band I want to share with you. Seam is a 90s indie rock band.

http://daydreaminsong.blogspot.com/2012/07/are-you-driving-me-crazy.html

Are You Driving Me Crazy??
Here's an album that you probably haven't heard of. Seam's Are You Driving Me Crazy? is a gem from the 90s. Here's the artwork.

Pretty blue, i'nnit? For me, album art tends to set the tone for the music, but maybe it's the other way around. Looking at Seam's other album artwork, I can see that they're all basically monochromatic. 4 albums, each with their own color. I believe it had to be a conscious decision on Seam's part to assign the artwork to what they felt represented the music, and I've got to say: in this case, blue was a great choice.

"Two Is Enough" This song was my first taste of Seam. I was listening to it 'blind'. It popped up on turntable.fm, which is a website where 5 people share music by listening to the same playlist made by themselves. Each person is a DJ in their own right, just sharing great music. My ears were hooked on first listen, and I loved that I instantly recognized the era. 90s sounding guitar tone, 90s typical hushed vocals. It was great! The song creates a wonderful tone which brings a sense of nostalgia and joy. It sounds like the band channeled their feelings and now as a listener I'm ingesting their creative output. How interesting that these feelings are universal and purely human, yet the sounds themselves are trapped in time. This 1995 record is marked in its time by the guitar drive, drum progression, and vocal style. Still, the band found a rather unique sound that really resonates with me.

"Haole Redux" And this would be the 'hit' off the album. It easily slides into any rock playlist and damn my ears if it doesn't give off that distant feeling of longing again. Actually, the singer makes it clear in the lyrics that he is in fact expressing the feeling of longing and love.

I made it clear to you
My sleep is restless
My heart is divided
Quarters, halves, & eighths
I’m in love with this feeling
This invisible feeling.

What I wanted to say
Would have sounded all wrong
In that crazy pitch of my
Pidgin stammering knotted tongue
He gets over these feelings by the end of the song, however. He belts out a satisfied, "I'm used to it," alongside his triumphant sounding band. The resolve found through the song is a testament to Seam's songwriting prowess. The fact that I found this band through someone completely unknown to me makes the record a gift. One that I can truly be grateful for on a day as fitting as this. My birthday.

Thank you.

Toe - The Future is Now EP REVIEW

Just a bit of writing I put together the last couple of nights. I took a stab at reviewing a great set of songs just released.
Check out my blog if you'd like to hear more. Daydream In Harmony (http://daydreaminsong.blogspot.com/)

Toe – The Future Is Now EP [2012] -- 9/10
Toe is a Japanese math rock band that has put out mostly instrumental releases. However, they’ve been known to have some songs recorded with vocals—usually Japanese and usually quite hushed and non-dominating. Instead of having traditional vocal structures implemented, toe consistently relies on their expertly orchestrated instrumentation to transport the listener to their creative world. The signature sound that toe brings is highlighted by innovative and often surprising songwriting in addition to impressive instrumental ability, both backed by superlative production quality.

Toe - (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0pT9h3mDNA)
The balanced production cues on the instrumentation for The Future Is Now really brings forth toe’s songwriting, engaging the listener to hear the intricate melodies the guitars provide. The drum beats which lead the songs are generally fast-paced and frantic, yet rather fluid and still follow a clear pattern which provides as a spine for the progression of the songs. Toe frequently let the songs build and tease before letting the songs erupt into a powerful climax which leaves the listener satisfied. This technique is found on “Ordinary Days” before the song simmers down to segue into the final track. On Future highlight “Tsuki Kake” the song snakes around fluttering percussion and travels through elegant acoustic guitar phrases, trotting bells, and even a synthesizer melody while female vocalist Aco provides an emotion-filled swoon. The song feels like a story being told despite the repetitive lyrics from the foreign vocals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kNZysnlqPs
The most impressive effort is found on the grand finale title track, however. Right off the bat, the fuse is lit with a complex counter-melody from the guitarists, and the song just keeps building and moving forward until exploding into a perfect climax at the last minute marker before smoldering to a finish. The last sound on the EP is from tired fingers sliding off a fret board.
The Future Is Now took me on journey that was fast-paced, explosive, and even melancholic. I constantly admired the instrumentation. The percussion is played with intent and ferocity, and the dual guitars were played synergetically, bouncing off each other and at times providing intricate counter-melodies. The beautiful clarity that the instruments were recorded with definitely adds to the overall effect. The EP comes highly recommended because it's completely satisfying and demands replays.

I've been back on Zyprexa for a while now for my schizophrenia. It worked great in the past, but it gave me the munchies (it was like having a guy pointing a gun at my head telling me to eat); I ended up putting on 60 lb. in 2 months. Luckily, my cholesterol levels stayed well within the safe range. It was either going back onto the Zyprexa...or more severe measures.

Luckily, the Zyprexa is working great, I don't have the munchies, and I've actually lost about 10 lb!

The bitter part is that I pulled the plug on my BF2 subscription. All good things must come to an end, I guess.

Indie Game: The Movie

Just finished watching indie game: the movie.

what a fantastic and beautiful look into the indie game development world. If I had to compare it to something, the closest I could think of is King of Kong. It is one of those movies that gives you a peek into a word that we really have no idea exists. After your done you cant help but feel apart of their world.

Growing up in the Nintendo Generation, I cant help but relate to these guys, and why they do what they do. even though I know how super meat boy and braid turned out. I found myself drawn in, and pulling for their success. To get a taste of the work that goes into one of these indie games, you cant help but feel humbled for the opportunity to experience the games that these guys have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into.

Hop on steam, fork out the 10 bucks, and sit and get into the minds of these 3 developers, who all did what we all want to do. Who doesn't want to make their own game? We all think that at some point in our life, but 99.9% of us die out on that dream and go back to the daily grind that is the human condition.

If you are anything like me, do yourself a service and watch this film, then take a leap of faith and join me on the indie train. I would love to be able to share what I love about indie titles with all my fellow nerds and geeks.

that is all -
