• Gunnar Paralex: A Second Opinion

A few months back in the Counter Strike Source forums I made a thread entitled “Eye ware for gaming?” In my first post to the thread, I linked to the Gunnar web page and immediately started to mock the thought. A few months later the opportunity came up to try out a pair of Gunnar’s glasses and write a review for the product. Needless to say I jumped at the opportunity, submitted my name into the list of people for consideration, and received a message from Vafa a few days later saying he would be sending me the glasses for testing. He sent me a pair of the Gunnar Paralex glasses with yellow tinted lenses.

For the next 2 weeks, whenever I was gaming on PC or console, I was constantly using the Gunnars and this is what I think of them.

    Pros of using the Gunnars:
    • Performance. The Gunnars perform as advertised in every single way, and some unexpected ways as well. The images on screen are magnified and sharper than I ever could imagine. The biggest noticeable performance boost was that I was able to see my crosshairs plainly on every map, even the ones that are notorious for not being able to see your crosshair clearly. HS-gunnar_paralex-jpgGunnars work just as well in low light conditions because they limit the the intensity of the light from the screen and don't strain the eyes. Also every map was made brighter and certain things were easier to spot. The dark corners and hallways on maps like Italy, Dust2 and Port all had increased visibility and it was easier to spot other players.
    • Comfort. These glasses are really comfortable. After playing while wearing them for 4 or 5 hour sessions I completely forgot that they were on. They do not dig into the side of your head when your headphones are on, but pretty much sit there and don't move. They are pretty much invisible to your sense of touch while you are playing for longer sessions.
    • Health benefits. By now you're probably going "Health benefits from glasses...yeah right!" Well they do provide some very important health benefits. On the Gunnar web page they provide information about the technology used in making the lenses and how they help to reduce glare from the screen and diminish eye strain. Usually after playing for about 2 hours, I start to rub my eyes and what not because I am constantly looking at the screen. Not one single time while playing with Gunnars did I perform this action. In my opinion this is the single biggest benefit of using Gunnars. Touching back on the low light conditions again, if you are playing the dark/low light areas, Gunnars really save your eyes by significantly reducing the light intensity that is experienced in these types of conditions.

    Cons of the Gunnars:
    • The lenses have a tendency to be smudged with relative ease, so I was literally cleaning them off every 5 minutes or so.
    • They do not fit well over my normal eye glasses at all. So all of my testing was done while wearing contacts.

Take it from someone who thought that the Gunnar glasses would be a complete joke and go get a pair. They cost anywhere from $79.99 to $99.00 depending on the style you choose. The Paralex pair that I tested cost $79.99. If you have a pair of glasses to correct eyesight, do not worry because Gunnars can be made for your prescription as well.

The worst part of this experience: I had to send them back. ...But I will be looking to purchase a pair of Gunnars for myself in the future. On a scale of 1 to 10 I give the glasses an easy 9 out of 10 and highly recommend them to anyone. They changed my opinion in just 2 weeks.

    Maybe yours will be next.

ever since i was a kid, i got migraines. and to be honest.. as much as i love gaming. they have been known to trigger my headaches. i have had these glasses for over a week now. just so happens i was on a week vacation and was having a serious week long game-a-thon. i keep a bottle of migraine medicine in my desk. not once did i need to use it. it may not sound like much but its been years since i have gone this long and not had an headache. i officially believe in this product 100%. i could never go back to how it was before. it would be like going back to dialup for me. i dont wear glasses, they are so comfortable, i don't even know they are on. but i really notice now, when they are not.

Thats pretty bad ass and i would agree with you they are well worth it. I have had mine now for 1.5 weeks and I love them for home computer/ gaming use. It has relieved my eye strain when i game on the weekends for long sessions. I heard about these glasses many months ago but i thought they were BSing me with all of there claims on what it could do so I never pulled the trigger. But with the recent review here i was like "what the hell" and I'm glad i did. I do agree with the cleaning these things pretty frequently which is kind of annoying but maybe I'm just an optical purist
