Thread: Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II

Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II

Starcraft II's gonna have some competition.

I played the first Dawn of War and the first expansion, Winter Assault, and loved it. Most fun with an RTS I'd ever had since Starcraft back in the day. I'd still be playing it if I could find the fucking CD-Key for the game; I'm guessing it was on one of those little paper sleeves they put game CDs in now instead of jewel cases, which means it's long gone now.

The current issue of PC Gamer has some good information on the game, along with the announced Warhammer 40K MMO (which, honestly, sounds kinda boring from what the article is saying), plus information on the Warhammer (the swords-and-sorcery Warhammer) MMO that's around the corner.

It sounds like Dawn of War II is going to try and buck the trend of build base-build units-kill base-repeat; at least, for the single-player campaign, anyway. The article said that, playing as Space Marines (it also said you could play as Orks, or any of the other races), you would have your standard Force Commander and about six squads of Space Marines, each lead by a unique Sergeant (with a unique model, sounds, and a specialty), and you will be using those same six squads in every mission. If a squad dies, they don't come back, and that will (probably) affect what missions you go through and/or how you go through them. I don't know how they intend to apply this to vehicles, but I like the sound of it more than the standard RTS gameplay style. Sounds like they're trying to change it from just building lots of units and drowning the enemy to using a small number of units and outsmarting the enemy - if they can pull it off, especially in multiplayer, I might end up liking Dawn of War II over Starcraft II.

The only announced races so far are just the Orks and Space Marines. The first Dawn of War also included Chaos Marines (evil Space Marines) and Eldar (elves in space), and introduced Imperial Guard (normal humans with big tanks), Necrons (cybernetic undead, sorta), the Tau, and the Sisters of Battle (nuns with flamethrowers) through expansions. They might have introduced Dark Eldar (evil elves in space) in an expansion; not sure on that.

The Tyrannids (Zerg with big, bronze balls) haven't shown up in either game yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if Dawn of War II includes them, if only to stack up against Starcraft's Zerg.

Re: Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II

I played some tabletop warhammer just this weekend with Aleal!
Ill be looking forward to this one, I still play the original though I find playing vs humans to be frustrating, either they start to lose and disco or they roll over me in like 2 minutes... And the CPu is just to easy even on hard.

What I would love is a turn based mod of DOW that realistically modeled the table top game - that would be sweet.

Ever heard of a game called Combat Mission mury?

As far as the game, it sounds like they're trying to make it more like the table top, which i like whole heartedly. After All, standard Force organization charts have 6 troop choices...

    omg i can't wait.

off topic...i wonder why it is that they keep giving the space marine commanders thunder hammers...

I for one am really excited. Read about it in the latest PC Gamer, and was elated. I don't play the Tabletop as much as I used to, but if they actually have Tyranids in this one, I would be very, very happy.

Yeah, I'm really, really looking forward to this game. A few friends and I spent many, many hours in huge, pitched battles against one another and other people online, and overall, it's a very solid RTS that also has the bitchin' cool factor. One thing I'm looking forward to is the implementation of actual air units - something that Soulstorm promised, but ended up being a ground unit that hovers 50 feet in the air.

Also, the idea of units that are not only persistent, but are led by individualized squad leaders, makes me happy in the pants, to quote AK.

    Let's not speak of Soulstorm.

I am glad to see they are making assault marines actually jump as opposed to the hovering - skimming wierdness they did in DOW1.

Cant wait for more armies to show.
