Dunno why they are still in business, Everyone hates em. Outrageous prices and fees for shit. Grrr.
I'm trying to get GABF tickets before they sell out. Grrr.

Ticketmaster has actually turned themselves into a middle man, most final ticket sales are done through brokers and scalpers.

Yes.
To extract a large portion of the value from any market, it's not necessary to control the entire process (vertical integration). Controlling the entirety of any one link in that chain is sufficient.
Ticketmaster has had an effective monopoly for quite a while. There have been a few examples of attempts to break that control. Some of them have been successful. Maybe their power is starting to wane.

Sometimes it does. Ticketmaster often negotiates (some would say: extorts) exclusive ticketing agreements with venues. It's not unusual to find that all appropriate venues for a particular band/show have this agreement.
You mentioned that the real problem is the price inflation associated with resellers. I'd certainly agree that that's one of the problems. For example, TicketsNow seems to be particularly effective at getting a good supply of tickets to scalp.
Who owns them again?
