SC rules on Immigration
High court strikes down key parts of Arizona immigration law - NBC Politics
The justices struck down three other parts of the law:
- One making it a crime for an illegal immigrant to work or to seek work in Arizona;
- One which authorized state and local officers to arrest people without a warrant if the officers have probable cause to believe a person is an illegal immigrant;
- And one that made it a state requirement for immigrants to register with the federal government.
The part of the law the justices upheld requires police officers stopping someone to make efforts to verify the persons immigration status with the federal government.
I have a few questions below.....
1. Isn't it a Fedral Law that illegals can not have a job? Your required to have a S.S. number but you can't get one if your an illegal. So how does that work with the first ruling above?
2. I don't understand this one frankly. If your an illegal then aren't you breakng the law? So the police can't enforce the law?
3. Why would you not want illegals to register with the federal government? Wouldn't it be better to know who some of these people are? I know not all are bad but their is murders,rapist etc...
My last question is about the part they upheld. What's the point in asking if they can't do anything about it? What's the point if the federal government isn't going to up hold the federal laws currently in place?
I still say if the Federal government was doing their job Arizona never would have had to do any of this. So it looks like we are back to square one.Last edited by ~BigTymer~; 06-25-12 at 02:36 PM.

Re: SC rules on Immigartion
Seems like an issue of the fed not wanting the state level to overstep their bounds.
Will read more later.

Not sure on the first one...I thought that was already illegal.
I can kinda understand the second one...how do you get probable cause on if someone is illegal or not? You can't just look at someone and say they're illegal. If you pull someone over and they don't have a license...that still isn't really any probable cause that they're illegal...so what would the standard be?
As to the third point..you wrote that they struck down immigrants registering with a federal agency. My stepfather is an immigrant and got his citizenship and he's registered as a citizen when he got it done. Until then you're on a visa so there's really no logical need to register with another agency. In order to enforce this against illegal immigrants you would have to know who they were already...in which case they would probably be deported already...

Re: SC rules on Immigartion
It doesn't seem too bad where I am in Texas...but then I'm in a relatively wealthy suburb of Dallas. It's likely worse the further south you go like where Hub, Al, and BD are. That being said, I don't exactly mind the illegals. I can't tell them apart too much but there's a lot of Mexican heritage/culture as is in Texas given the history of the state. Texas wouldn't be Texas without the Tejanos.
I do agree that the fed does need to do something, but you, I, and everyone else knows that it isn't going to happen in an election year. Something needs to be done, but as to what, I'm not exactly sure.
I would say that outright amnesty might not work, but kicking them all out would cost a shit ton. Maybe a program where they could get streamlined to citizenship? Something where hard work would translate into legal status. I mean, if they're willing to bust their asses...
However, a measure like that getting passed will likely require one party controlling the executive and the legislative.

Re: SC rules on Immigartion
A lot of illegals are fleeing into deeper parts of the US and the east coast. Reason being that in the border states you are much more likely to be deported because of the cost of deportation. It's just a 2 hour bus ride and you get dropped off. From my understanding other states farther east are less likely to deport you unless you have committed a felony because the costs of transporting you all the way back to Mexico is much greater.
