Thread: Lets talk about God

    Lets talk about God

And not the normal which is better, believe what I say, Organized Religion crap. This one is inspired from a online quiz I took once.

The question (or topic of discussion): What abilities does a "higher power" need to be consider a "god?"

some other questions for thought, possible discussion as well:
Does "god(s)" have to be "good" or can their be an evil "god?"

If a "god" says something widely considered morally right is a "sin," does that make it a sin?

    Re: Lets talk about God

God is just an imaginary figure used to give blame or reason to something that has a better explained but less interesting reason.

    Evolution = win.

Multiverse theory = the best theory ever.

Typically immortality. In the sense that they may exist for a long period of time, and do not require physical form.
An imprint of human intellect, emotion, or desires. Generally an influence or meaning to the the tangible worldly domain of the universe.

Both, or neither. Good/Evil is a concept that is not uniform across human culture. So this in and of itself is a question of perception.

I think you are referring to a venial sin. Generally these are more about good living than something "punishable" by said deity.

geez we can't speculate a little, have a discussion on a topic of god that isn't just "God doesn't exist, evolution is right!!" "No you're stupid, God does exist and evolution is wrong!!"

    Re: Lets talk about God

As to my own questions, my feeling is to be a "god" they have to have the ability to "Create beyond normal means." What I mean by this is just because you make a baby you are not "a god." Nor if you plant a seed and help it grow. But a God should be able to create plants, trees, people, animals in a way that you or I could not manage. Immoritally was one I didn't think about, and you are absolutely correct on that one.

That depends on the culture and it's sophistication or lack there of or maybe it's just in our genes. http://www.evolutionofgod.net/excerpts_appendix/

look at me, I read a book.

There isn't much that's incompatible with evolution and creationism.

the going theory on the universe and earth forming is....

    big bang
then gases and debris form into larger planets and stars
then one of these planets (ours) forms an ocean (the primordial soup)
then tectonic activity and volcanoes produce land formations
then early microbes become algae, and plants
then alternative microbes symbiotically form by consuming the byproducts and wastes of the plants (sugar and O2)
then we eventually come around through the species as humans.

    sounds about right?

Now go read genesis, and tell me the order of things made, day by day.

And then....just kind of sit there...and wonder....."what are the odds", right?

the only power a god must have is the power to have all power. omnipotence. And then, all other powers are included within that realm.

And given said god would have the power to be "good" or "evil", then truly it isn't good or evil. It just "is".

So the question I always ask when people try to say there is no such thing as god(s) is then how did it all start? Sure, big bang, but what banged, and how did it get here? At some point you had to have something that superseded the laws as we know them to create whatever eventually became what is here today. There is your answer to what is a god.
