Unhappy High court strikes down Chicago handgun ban

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/06/28/...s.handgun.ban/

"It cannot be doubted that the right to bear arms was regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as states legislated in an evenhanded manner," wrote Justice Samuel Alito.
In dissent, Justice Stephen Breyer predicated far-reaching implications. "Incorporating the right," he wrote, "may change the law in many of the 50 states. Read in the majority's favor, the historical evidence" for the decision "is at most ambiguous."
I'm not surprised, a little disappointed, but not surprised.

Well, I suppose the next step is for the City Council to heavily regulate the sale and ownership of handguns within the scope of this ruling. I believe they have proposals ready to enact, just for this type of ruling.

I don't foresee less deaths and crime though..... Maybe more.

Great, now the overly triggerhappy cops are going to approach every building and car as if it is definite that there is a gun wielding psycho behind the door.

Chicago mayor won't 'roll over' if gun ban lifted
By DON BABWIN and JESSICA GRESKO (AP) – 3 days ago
CHICAGO — If the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down Chicago's handgun ban, the city will likely do what Washington, D.C., did when its own ban was overturned two years ago: Put in place all sorts of restrictions to make it tougher to buy guns and easier for police to know who has them.
Prospective gun owners in D.C. now are required to take training courses that include spending one hour on a firing range and several hours in a classroom learning about gun safety. They also must pass a 20 question test based on D.C.'s firearm laws.
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he's encouraged by what he sees in D.C. and vows not go down without a fight.
"We're not going to roll over," Daley told The Associated Press.

You know it seems like it would be easier to become a citizen of the U.S. that has a right to bear arms than to get arms to bear in Chicago.

Which is a bad thing how?
I say make it as tough as possible to acquire a handgun in the city, and keep a well detailed and maintained record of who owns and what. So our first responders will have an idea as to whether they are approaching someone's arsenal?

Don't see the surprise. Given the ruling in the DC gun case, essentially the fundamental right to bear arms is now incopororated to all the states (from the constitution).

Nope not a bad thing at all. I was just thinking about what it takes to become a citizen with rights versus what it takes for said citizen to acquire the rights that should come with citizenship.

Hopefully they were trained to do so at the academy, otherwise you have a very unprepared and poorly trained police force. Imagine...the Chicago PD, previously not burdened with the fear of armed criminals used to walk up to domestic violence calls and suspicious person or robbery reports unafraid and casual-like.

    "Where ya headed?"

"Oh, there's a report of a Code-5 over at Humboldt Park...I'm sure glad handguns are illegal, otherwise I might be worried!"

Well if the cop knew anything that any Chicagoan with his eyes open knew.... Is that just about any disturbance in Humboldt Park is gang related and most definitely has a gun involved....... Now it is a problem when they have to approach houses for domestic disturbances in Bridgeport, Beverly, Lakeview and Lincoln Park as if they are entering a house in Englewood or the Westside.

Remember those video of the triggerhappy cops shooting dogs while entering a house and another while asking for directions? Well I would assume that they were taught proper procedure as well...... And we see how well that did for them.
