The surfing animal of the year has to be Tofu the incredible surfing rat.


They almost gave the award for 'most bizarre cat' to Yoda the four-eared kitten from Chicago...


but these three odd-eyed Diamond Eye Thai cats stared them into submission.


The 'most evil cat of year' award was a closely-fought contest, almost won by this Canadian Sphinx at a cat exhibition in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek...


...but they think this hairless Canadian Sphynx in Sofia just has the edge.


The 'cat and mouse' award very nearly went to this cat chasing a rodent across a frozen lake in Poland...


...but it goes to Jay Jay, who was demonstrating his computer skills at Madison Square Garden in New York.


The 'cute and fluffy animal in a silly costume' category was very nearly won by this rabbit in a tartan dress from Japan...


...but they decided to give the award to these two dressed-up guinea pigs from Peru, if only because they were due to be eaten shortly after the picture was taken...


Runner-up in the 'best dog in a silly costume' is Peanut, a Chihuahua, dressed as Elle Woods from the film, Legally Blonde, who won the fourth annual Times Square Dog Day Masquerade canine costume contest..


...but the winner is this fancy dress contest entrant at the 125th anniversary Pug Club members' party in Richmond, North Yorkshire.


Britain's biggest bullock, a seven-year-old Charolais named The Field Marshall weighing more than 3,500 pounds, almost won 'cow of the year'...


...but the winner is this cow who got her head stuck in a fly-tipped washing machine drum in a field at Higher Fraddon, St Columb, Cornwall.


Runner-up in the 'most icky photo from a dog show' is this picture of Lara Alameddine sharing an intimate moment with her dog Lily in Los Angeles...


...and the winner is this picture, taken at a dog show in Budapest, which took them ages to work out what it was of.


Dotty the dachshund, from Bridgewater in Somerset, was a very strong contender in the 'bravest animal on wheels' category...


...but the award goes to Ethel the rabbit from Deeside, with her custom-built miniature chariot.


The 'two-headed animal' category was almost won by this turtle named Tom And Jerry seen at Reptile World in Halle, Germany...


...but the award has to go to this two-headed kitten born in Perth, Australia


The runner-up for 'best parrot in a silly role' is Keow Wan, who kept the crowds entertained during a rally outside Parliament in Bangkok...


...and the winner is this skating parrot from Shenyang, China.


The prize for 'smallest animal that should be big' was shared by Hope, a six-week-old mini Shetland pony from Gloucester...


...and this miniature pony who stands less than 15 inches high, from Ballan, near Melbourne.


Runner-up for 'best supporting horse in a royal walkabout' is this Lipica horse called Kanizo who looked surprised to see the Queen in Slovenia...


...and the winner is this horse who shared a joke with Camilla backstage at Olympia.


The runner-up for 'best dog in a combat situation' is Keena, who was photographed out hunting in Bonduel, Wisconsin...


...and the winner is this puppy fast asleep under a US soldier's hat and rifles in Baquba, Iraq.


And finally, the cutest animal picture of the year has to be this dormouse, snoozing at Fyne Court, Somerset...
