    Anandtech: Nokia 7.1 Smartphone Launched: 5.84-Inch ‘PureDisplay’, Zeiss Optics

    HMD Global today introduced its new ‘performance mainstream’ smartphone that will replace the existing Nokia 7.1 on the global market and will be available towards the end of the month. The new Nokia 7.1 features a large 5.84-inch display featuring a 19:9 aspect ratio with a notch and is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 platform.
    The Nokia 7.1 comes in a symmetric chassis with rather sharp edges designed to ensure a pleasant and reliable grip during usage of the phone. The enclosure is comprised of a 6000-series unibody CNC-machined aluminum frame, and a die cast metallic center covered with glass for some extra bling, a rather unique construction and combination of materials. As for finishes, the Nokia 7.1 will be available in Gloss Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel colors with the latter featuring copper accents.

    The smartphone is outfitted with a 5.84-inch 19:9 display with a 2244×1080 resolution, a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (not that DCR matters that much, but HMD only mentions this one), and Corning Gorilla 3 cover glass. The LCD uses Nokia’s new PureDisplay hardware and software technology enabled by a PixelWorks chip that is capable of displaying HDR10 content, upscale SDR content to HDR, and adjust brightness and contrast dynamically to provide the best visual experience both indoors and outdoors.
    From internal hardware point of view, the Nokia 7.1 is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 that integrates eight Kryo 260 cores (so, four semi-custom Cortex-A73 and four semi-custom Cortex-A53 cores) along with an Adreno 509 graphics core, and an X12 LTE modem. The SoC will be accompanied by 3 or 4 GB of LPDDR4 memory as well as 32 GB or 64 GB of NAND flash storage. The handset is outfitted with a built-in 3,060 mAh battery that can charge to 50% in 30 minutes.
    Moving on to imaging capabilities of the Nokia 7.1. The main camera features optics developed by Zeiss, a 12MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and a 5MP B&W sensor to capture depth. The selfie camera uses a 8MP f/2.0 sensor and support “AI-enhanced” face unlock. As usual, Nokia outfits its cams with a host of enhancements and exclusive features, such as the “bothie” that allows to record videos or take photos using both front and back cameras at the same time. One thing to note is that besides new hardware, Nokia 7.1’s camera also received new UI that features a Pro Camera Mode that enables a thorough control of white balance, ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.
    When it comes to physical interfaces, the Nokia 7.1 has a USB Type-C for data and power, a 3.5-mm TRRS audio jack, a fingerprint reader on the back, as well as a regular set of physical buttons (power, volume, etc.).
    As for software, the Nokia 7.1 will be initially available with Android 8.1 Oreo and will receive an Android 9 Pie update shortly after the launch. Meanwhile, like other recent phones from HMD, the Nokia 7.1 belongs to the AndroidOne programme, which guarantees three years of monthly security patches, and two years of OS updates.
    The Nokia 7.1 will hit select markets in October 22. The 3 GB/32 GB version will cost $349/€319, whereas the 4 GB/64 GB flavor will be available for €349.

    Anandtech: ASRock's New Z390 Motherboards

    While a lot of speculation in regards to Z390 motherboards has been made recently, ASRock has jumped the gun (on purpose?) and unveiled its upcoming gaming-focused Z390 product stack officially.
    The newest addition to ASRock's motherboard SKU list is the introduction of the new Phantom Gaming series which uses the brand new Realtek RTL8125AG 2.5G NIC which we initially speculated on yesterday. Inclusive of the new Realtek RTL8125AG gaming-focused LAN on ASRock's Phantom Gaming range is a new software package which allows users to intelligently shape traffic while gaming to as ASRock eloquently puts it "accelerate critical gaming network traffic ahead of other data to provide smoother, stuffer-free game performance and give gamers the ultimate competitive edge".

    ASRock's new offerings, currently listed as supporting Intel's 8th Generation CPUs, include the flagship Z390 Phantom Gaming 9 with 2.5G LAN with a pairing of dual Intel-based NICs to offer a total of three LAN ports on the rear panel. Along with this is 2T2R Wave 2 802.11ac Wi-Fi with support for up to 1.73 Gbps of bandwidth.
    Also included in the new line up is the Z390 Phantom Gaming 6 which features a cut down feature set to the Phantom Gaming 9, but still retaining a lot of the gaming-focused features, such as 2.5G+2x1G. The Z390 Phantom Gaming 4, Z390 Phantom Gaming SLI and Z390 Phantom Gaming SLI AC look to cater towards users looking towards the mid-range of the Z390 motherboards at launch. This also includes the ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac mini-ITX motherboard with 2T2R 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Realtek ALC1220 HD audio codec dual PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slots and an integrated Thunderbolt 3 port onto the rear panel.
    Other non-gaming options available include the ASRock Z390 Extreme4, ASRock Z390 Pro4, the mATX sized ASRock Z390M Pro and mini-ITX ASRock Z390M-ITX/ac. These offerings are aimed at users looking for an entry-level option without spending extra budget on lots of RGB, gaming-based controllers and over exuberant aesthetics.
    ASRock has also re-launched a new pair of Taichi inspired high-end boards onto the Z390 chipset with the ASRock Z390 Taichi (will be reviewed in the coming weeks) and the ASRock Z390 Taichi Ultimate. An Aquantia 10G LAN is featured on the Ultimate model, while both the ASRock Z390 Taichi and Z390 Taichi Ultimate will both benefit from a Realtek ALC1220 HD audio codec, three USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A and one USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C on the rear panel, with both models offering WI-Fi and Bluetooth 5 connectivity.

    Anandtech: SanDisk Extreme microSD Cards with A2 App Performance Spec Unveiled: 4K/2K

    Western Digital’s SanDisk division on Friday unveiled its first lineup of microSD cards that are compliant with the App Performance 2 (A2) specification. The new SanDisk Extreme cards are designed primarily for smartphones, so they do not offer very high sequential read/write speeds, yet in accordance with the A2 requirements, they offer rather high random performance for a removable memory card, making them better suited for running apps off of them.
    The new SanDisk Extreme microSD cards with A2 badge will be available in 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, and 400 GB capacities. The new memory cards use the UHS-I bus and are rated for up to 90 MB/s sequential read speeds as well as up to 60 - 70 MB/s sequential write speeds, depending on the capacity (32 and 64 GB cards are a tad slower). The cards also carry the V30 badge and therefore support a minimum of 30 MB/s write speed.
    More importantly, in line with the A2 requirements, the new SanDisk Extreme microSD have a random performance of at least 4000 write IOPS and 2000 write IOPS. In addition to enhanced random performance (vs. 1500/500 read/write IOPS mandated by the A1), A2 cards are required to support such functions as command queuing (with a minimum depth queue of 2 and a maximum depth queue of 32) to optimize random read performance, caching to hit write performance targets, as well as self-maintenance capabilities.
    The SD Association’s A2 spec was designed specifically to improve performance of applications that are installed on microSD cards. In fact, the latest versions of Android only allow users to install apps on A1/A2-badged microSDs. With enhanced random read/write speeds, the new cards will be a better fit for apps that perform a lot of read/write operations and will therefore significantly improve user experience. Meanwhile, just like their predecessors available today, the new SanDisk Extreme cards are compliant with UHS Speed Class 3 and Video Speed Class 30 specs, thus providing at least 30 MB/s sequential write speed and simultaneous interleaving of eight different files, which is useful for 360° videos, or even numerous high-quality Ultra-HD still pictures taken simultaneously.
    To further ensure that the new SanDisk Extreme cards are suitable for photographers and drones that happen to work in rough conditions, they are designed to operate in the range between -13ºF to 185ºF (-25ºC to 85ºC).

    Traditionally for SanDisk Extreme microSD cards, the new products will ship with the SanDisk Memory Zone (helps to organize data on Android-based devices and effortlessly back it up to the card) and RescuePRO (simplifies recovery of files that were accidentally deleted) apps.
    Western Digital Japan plans to start sales of its SanDisk Extreme microSD cards with A2 badge on October 12. It is unknown when these cards hit other markets, but it is highly likely that this is going to happen shortly. Western Digital is the first company to announce its A2-compliant microSD cards officially. At least one vendor has demonstrated such cards on various occasions, but so far has neither listed them nor started their sales.

    Anandtech: AMD 12 and 24-Core Threadripper 2 CPUs: 2970WX and 2920X on 29th October

    AMD has now disclosed the availability date for the two additional members of its 2nd Generation Ryzen Threadripper family. The AMD Threadripper 2970WX for extreme workstations as well as the AMD Threadripper 2920X for high-end desktops will be available for purchase globally on October 29.
    The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX processor is similar to the 2990WX, which uses four eight-core Zeppelin dies on a single piece of substrate, but with one core disabled within each CCX (two per die). The CPU thus has 24 cores with SMT technology and running at 3.0-4.2 GHz, 64 MB of cache, a quad-channel DDR4-2933 memory subsystem, and 60+4 lanes of PCIe Gen 3. The chip has a 250 W TDP and therefore greatly benefits from the latest AMD X399-based motherboards with enhanced VRMs as well as high-performance coolers designed to dissipate such a vast amount of thermal energy.
    Designed for high-end desktops for enthusiasts, the Ryzen Threadripper 2920X uses two Zen+ dies with two cores disabled within each of them. Running its 12 cores with SMT at 3.5-4.3 GHz, the chip offers 32 MB of cache, a quad-channel DDR4-2933 memory subsystem, and 60+4 lanes of PCIe Gen 3. With a TDP of 180 W, the “baby” Threadripper 2 is compatible with any AMD X399-powered platform with a proper BIOS. Meanwhile, since such chips are made to be overclocked, a motherboard with a reliable VRM and a robust cooler are highly recommended since power consumption and TDP tend to skyrocket on overclocked processors.

    AMD is also noting today that these parts will feature a 'Dynamic Local Mode', designed to arrange the NUMA such that cores with direct access to memory have priority, although we will have to look deeper into this feature.

    Anandtech: EVGA Enters SFX Market with SuperNOVA GM SFX PSUs

    High-performance gaming PCs do not have to be big, and the rising popularity of SFX systems among gamers proves that many people already know it. Along these lines, EVGA on Thursday became yet another high-end brand to enter the market of SFX power supplies. The EVGA SuperNova GM SFX PSUs are rated for up to 650 W output, feature modular design, use reliable capacitors, and come with a base seven-years warranty.
    The EVGA SuperNOVA GM SFX lineup of power supplies includes three SKUs rated for 450 W, 550 W, and 650 W maximum load. All three models are compliant with the SFX12V V3.3 and ATX12V V2.4 specifications and carry the 80 Plus Gold certification badge. The power supplies come in standard 100-mm depth chassis and are outfitted with a 92-mm double ball bearing fan that kicks in only when the load exceeds 30%. All three also feature a modular design to ensure clean system builds and easy cable management. Like other high-end PSUs these days, EVGA’s SuperNOVA GM SFX power supplies use Japanese capacitors rated for 330 uF/420 V and high temperatures (which EVGA does not specify).
    The SFX power supplies from EVGA come equipped with EPS12V power connectors (one 24-pin and a 4+4-pin connector). Depending on the model, the PSUs feature two or four PCIe 8-pin PCIe auxiliary power plugs for up to two high-performance graphics cards (or one of EVGA’s K|NGP|N boards that need three inputs), four or six SATA power connectors, four Molex power outputs, and one FDD connector. All the cables are individually sleeved for greater flexibility. Given the maximum output of 650 W and a vast amount of connectors, some of these SFX power supplies may end up in Micro-ATX or even ATX systems, which is why EVGA supplies an ATX bracket with the PSUs.
    Moving on to reliability and operating temperatures. The EVGA SuperNOVA GM SFX PSUs are rated to work at up to 40? with a 100,000 hours MTBF. To guarantee safety and reliability, the PSUs are outfitted with over current, over power, over/under voltage, over temperature, and short circuit protection technologies.

    EVGA is a yet another high-profile supplier of PSUs that decided to enter the market of SFX products in the last couple of years. As of 2015, only two "gaming" brands offered such power supplies — Corsair and SilverStone. In the period between 2016 and 2017 four new players started to ship SFX PSUs, including Be Quiet!, Enermax, FSP, and Thermaltake.

    Anandtech: Gigabyte Drops More Early Z390 Motherboards

    With the Z390 chipset right around the corner, yesterday we reported that ASRock had jumped the gun with announcing their product stack. Today GIGABYTE has done the same with their new Z390 range with a total of ten new models to complement the launch of Intel's soon to hit the shelves 9th generation of processors.
    Earlier on in the year with their AMD B450 chipset motherboards, GIGABYTE has altered their Aorus product naming scheme to help users differentiate between models. This change is to help eliminate the somewhat confusing numbering scheme of boards, and is something most other manufacturers have started embracing as well.
    First up is the GIGABYTE Z390 Aorus Master, which replaces the previous Z370 Aorus Gaming 7 and sits directly below the soon to be released Z390 Aorus Xtreme flagship model. The Z390 Aorus Master will have a total of three M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slots and three full-length PCIe 3.0 slots operating at x16, x8, and x4, which means support for two-way SLI and up to three-way CrossFire is supported. The Aorus Master also makes use of a Realtek ALC1220-VB audio codec and an ESS Sabre 9118 DAC; 2x2 Wave 2 Wi-Fi is also a notable feature.
    Other models released in the Z390 Aorus gaming range includes the slightly lower spec Z390 Aorus Ultra, which retains much of the core and premium features of the Z390 Aorus Master. Also announced in the new Aorus product stack is the Z390 Aorus Pro, Z390 Aorus Pro WIFI, the Z390 Aorus Elite, and a new gaming-focused mini-ITX motherboard, the Z390 I Aorus Pro WIFI.
    Meanwhile aimed primarily at gamers on a budget, a trio of non-Aorus branded gaming-centric motherboards have also been announced. These include the Z390 Gaming SLI and Z390 Gaming X, with both boards offering dual M.2 PCIe 3.0/SATA slots, six SATA ports and an Intel I219V Gigabit LAN. Differentiating the two boards is SLI support and the audio codec; the Z390 Gaming SLI includes two-way SLI support and utilizes a Realtek ALC1220-VB audio codec, while the Z390 Gaming X drops the audio codec down to a Realtek ALC892 HD codec. The third member of the group, the mATX-sized GIGABYTE Z390M Gaming, offers many of the same features the ATX sized Z390 Gaming X model but in a smaller frame. The Z390M Gaming has a Realtek ALC892 audio codec, Intel Gigabit LAN, and also has a total of six SATA ports.
    The final board in the GIGABYTE Z390 product stack to be unveiled is the professional and ultra durable Z390 UD, which drops all of the gaming-themed brandings and focuses primarily on offering users a cost-effective and entry-level route onto the new Z390 chipset. The entry Z390 UD has a Realtek ALC892 HD audio codec, sports two full-length PCIe 3.0 slots running at x16/x4 respectively, and includes two USB 3.1 Gen2 ports (Type-A and Type-C) on the rear panel. This is a good indicator that vendors are making use of the native USB 3.1 Gen2 integrated within the Z390 chipset, even on their base models.
    Pricing and availability on the GIGABYTE Z390 motherboards is currently unavailable, but we will be doing a full overview of the Z390 chipset next week where all will be revealed.

    Anandtech: Intel to Hold PC Desktop Event on Monday, October 8th

    If the early motherboard announcements haven’t already made it clear, then Intel’s own announcement will: the CPU giant is about to release a new wave of PC desktop hardware.
    This afternoon, Intel is announcing that they will be holding a “Fall Desktop Launch Event” on Monday. Official details on the event are slim – with Intel’s official tweet just stating that “There has never been a better time to own a desktop PC” – however from the early Z390 motherboard reveals and associated documentation, it’s clear that Intel is gearing up to release their long-awaited Z390 chipset and a new (9th?) generation of CPUs to go with them.
    At any rate, the company will be livestreaming the event, and AnandTech will be covering it as well. So you’ll want to be up bright and early to catch Intel’s 10am ET reveal.

    Anandtech: Intel Announces Xeon W-3175X: 28-Core Processor for Extreme Workstations

    Intel on Monday officially introduced its 28-core processor for extreme workstations that it teased first back in June. The new chip comes with unlocked multiplier and can run at up to 4.3 GHz in burst mode.
    The Intel Xeon W-3175X CPU is based on the Skylake/Cascade Lake microarchitecture and is compatible with motherboards featuring Intel’s LGA3647 server-based socket. The CPUs features a six-channel DDR4 memory controller and a massive cache. Since the chip uses a new socket, it is naturally not compatible with any motherboards available on the market. Meanwhile, to date, only ASUS and GIGABYTE have confirmed plans to offer mainboards for Intel’s Xeon W-3175X.

    Anandtech: Samsung Starts to Take Pre-Orders on 85-Inch Q900 8K UHDTV

    Samsung this month has started to take pre-orders on its first commercial 8K UHDTV, the Q900, which sports a 7680×4320 resolution. Besides the sheer number of pixels that the Samsung Q900-series UHDTV can display, the family features a plethora of premium technologies from the manufacturer, including QLED FALD-like backlighting, a proprietary 8K upscaling technology, support for a varity of HDR formats, and so on. The price per unit? Well, it is on par with a new Ford Fiesta in the U.S.
    Samsung’s Q900-series 8K UHDTV lineup will include 65, 75, 82, and 85 inch models. The first product that the manufacturer plans to make available later this month is the flagship 85-inch (Q85Q900RA) SKU aimed at the most demanding users who are concerned about the quality and experience in the first place.
    Samsung's Q900RA UHDTVs are based on the company’s panels, which are backed by a quantum dot-enhanced LED backlight that is also capable of FALD-like operation, which Samsung dubs Direct Full Array Elite technology. The televisions feature a peak brightness of 4000 nits, which is the maximum brightness at which HDR content is mastered today. Speaking of HDR, the Q900-series officially supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG formats, but not Dolby Vision (at least for now). As for color gamut, the Q900-series can reproduce 100% of the DCI-P3 space.
    Serving as the brains of Samsung’s Q900RA televisions is the company’s Quantum Processor 8K, which is responsible for all decoding, upscaling, and other operations. One of the features of the SoC that Samsung is especially proud of is its proprietary 8K AI Upscaling technology, which is designed to enhance the quality of digital content to panel’s native resolution (does not work with PCs, games, analogue content, etc.). The only thing that Samsung explains about the tech is that it uses “AI-based formulas” for “intelligent upscaling”. The SoC is also apparently able to interpolate content to 240 FPS.
    When it comes to audio output capabilities, Samsung’s 85-inch Q900RA UHDTV is equipped with a 60-W 4.2-channel audio subsystem.
    Moving on to connectivity. Like all ultra-premium UHDTVs from Samsung, the Q900-series uses the company’s optical One Invisible Connection to the One Connect Box, which has all the physical inputs. In the case of the Q900, the box has four HDMI headers, three USB ports, and one LAN connector. In addition, the Q900-series supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
    Samsung’s 85-inch Q900RA QLED Smart UHD TV (QN85Q900RAFXZA) can be pre-ordered now for $14,999.99 (by contrast, the Fiesta starts at $14,260). The manufacturer will start shipments of the product on the last week of October, which starts on the 28th.
