Need Hosting Recommendation.
I need to set up a small web site for a summer event that's been going on for a few more than a few years.
It's not a business thing, it's just an "old buds who get together each summer but it kept growing and now it's ridiculous, with spouses and kids and a stage and a PA and t-shirts and so much debauchery that we now need a web site"
In our group, the guy who is That Guy is me.
I need recommendations on hosting.
I have spec'd, bought, and admined dedicated hardware before. I have rented dedicated servers at hosting companies. All my experience is with things that are overkill for this job.
This is a small deal. Shared/Virtual hosting should be plenty. We'd like to do email through the domain. The most complicated thing I see the site needing is a photo upload/view app. Maybe we want to goof with some sort of blog-ish thing or community-whatnot, but that'd be strictly secondary. Most people blog or socialize through other services.
I have no experience with this sort of thing. It seems like there are about a million shared/virtual hosting companies out there (most of whom are probably re-selling someone else's service), with prices in the $10 - $20 a month range.
I won't need any hand-holding. I'd like to be confident that I actually own the domain I register. I don't mind using a separate domain registrar. I have a strong preference for *nix, Debian-flavoured if possible. Though I can drive it from bash, I don't have anything against the control-panel interfaces that automate the process.
Anyone have any experiences - positive or negative - with providers of this sort of service?
Cheers,
AetheLove

I know friends who used godaddy and they seemed to like it. They said it was easy to set up. Though all they did were pretty basic things.

I use BlueHost for my personal webhost.

I use a local ISP and get great service. You should check the phone book for local options.

This is going off of memory, but, I think he killed the elephants that were trashing the farms of the people there. The all of the meat went to those people in the villages.
If it is something really small you could always set up your own. There are a shitload of different companies (Unreal Hosting, GoDaddy, BlueHost, etc.) I have used over the years. Now, I just do it on my servers.Last edited by Partyball; 03-12-12 at 08:43 AM.
