Retro Gaming Rig
So I decided that my next project will be a retro gaming PC with Windows 98 SE so I can play some of my old games (without having to re-buy them all on GOG).
CPU - AMD Athalon 1000 1.0 GHz - $4.99
Motherboard - ASROCK K7S41GX Socket A - $28.95
Memory - Samsung PC2100 266MHz 2 x 1GB - $16.16
Graphics Card - Creative Labs NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS - $12.75
I am still shopping for a CPU cooler, but I should be able to find one for $5. I will bring the ole Microsoft Side Winder game pad out of retirement, as well as some other gaming goodies.
I also decided on a Micro ATX motherboard so I can get a smaller case to keep under my desk and out of the way. The case will likely cost just as much as all of the other components combined, but oh well.
Stay tuned for more...

Well crap. I already bought a lot of stuff. I believe my X-Fi Xtreme Gamer has win 98 drivers and is standard PCI.
I will think about other stuff I need. I already know the case I want. Just waiting on an ebay auction.

Nice heavy! Haha I myself want to try out an old build but I have a slight itch for doing a ITX gaming rig next.
Cards are getting shorter after all!

Re: Retro Gaming Rig
I have a 98 box that didn't cost a penny.
It's called DOSBOX.

Built one of those last week. Mine has a socket 939 Opteron on an Asus nForce 4 board with a Geforce 7900GT and a Soundblaster live running Win 98SE. The kids are digging MAME and SNES on it. I had all the parts just sitting around and decided to teach the kids how to build a PC. It was fun to build with them and they love the old games.

Re: Retro Gaming Rig
Wait, why can't you install those games on your current rig, because of the incompatibility? Just googled Monster Truck Madness 2 and fount this Monster Truck Madness 2 , also can't you get most of those games for free now?
